Battle royale is quite a flexible game mode that can fit into almost any type of game, even a turn-based strategy game like Civilization 6. For those who are still unaware, in a typical battle royale game/mode, a number of people drop onto random points on a map, and the goal is to collect supplies like armor, weapons, etc. and survive until the very end, the last person standing wins. Civilization 6 is translating the battle royale mechanics for its own game with some unique strategy elements.

12 players will duke it out in Civilization 6’s battle royale mode and each player will control a civilization of their own. Fortunately, players won’t have to build the civilizations at all; instead, each player will be able to choose from a group of different post-apocalyptic factions, with each faction offering various advantages in the game. Instead of dropping on a random point, players’ factions will spawn in a safe zone along with an infantry unit, a machine gun unit, and a civilian. Similar to other battle royale games, the safe zone will shrink every few turns reducing the playable area. Players will be forced to move all their units inward which will eventually lead to factions facing each other in battle.

The elimination rules are quite simple, if the last remaining civilian is captured then that faction will be eliminated, so players will have to use all of their mobile-combat units to protect the civilians. Each faction can bolster their ranks by adding extra units like helicopters, tanks, and even more civilians by investigating city ruins or raider camps. Supply drops will also be available once the safe zone starts shrinking, these drops include artillery units, tanks, and nukes.

The developers did announce that a new multiplayer mode will be added to the game, but no one expected a battle royale mode. While it may not be quite as extensive as the Rise and Fall expansion, the September update for Civilization 6 brings a lot of different features, but Red Death definitely takes the cake. The new game mode is free for everyone who owns Civilization 6.
