While Clubhouse is focused on social audio, it has launched a chat feature that will make it easier for you to engage with others on the app with text instead.

Clubhouse Launches In-Room Chat Feature

Clubhouse has launched an in-room chat feature that lets you engage in a Room discussion via text. The social audio app announced the feature in a blog post:

The feature makes sense as it accommodates those users who prefer not to engage in audio discussions by voice. Clubhouse’s chat feature is available on both Android and iOS.

How to Use Clubhouse Text Chat

The text chat function works similarly to chat functions on other platforms. While a discussion is ongoing, you can engage with the hosts and fellow listeners by sharing text messages in a room.

Creators can enable chats for their discussions and have full control over them. For instance, they can delete messages they deem inappropriate. Alternatively, they can appoint moderators to manage the chat for them.

For listeners, here’s how you can use Clubhouse’s chat function during a discussion:

Open the Clubhouse app. Once in the Hallway, tap the Room you want to enter. If the Room you’ve entered has the chat function enabled, it will be indicated by a Chat button in the bottom-left corner, next to the Share and Clip icons. Tap Chat to open the text window. Now write your message in the text box at the bottom of the screen, then tap Send on the right.

After a discussion is over, the chats will appear in the Clubhouse Room’s Replay if one is available. This means you can catch up on the discussions, just like you would typically do with a Facebook Live video.

However, you can no longer send messages after the live discussion is over.

Clubhouse’s Chat Feature Encourages More Engagement

The ability to text in chat on Clubhouse gives users an alternative way to participate in discussions.

Having more engagement could also be encouraging for hosts as they can get feedback from listeners in real time.
