At C2E2 in Chicago, Cody Rhodes, Excalibur, and The Young Bucks hosted a panel where Rhodes touched on the AEW video game. Rhodes stressed that fans need to be patient for the game as such things take time, but he said, “There is a very specific type of game that people want. There is a very specific engine that people want,” Rhodes said. He continued, “I bet Kenny Omega will provide a wonderful announcement sometime soon.”

While Rhodes didn’t outright say that the AEW video game will use the AKI engine from WWF No Mercy, it seems pretty clear that’s what he means. Of course, it’s possible that Rhodes is referring to some other wrestling game engine, but there aren’t really any that have the name recognition as the AKI engine. Not only that, but this isn’t the first time that someone from AEW has teased that the upcoming video game will be similar to WWF No Mercy.
In the meantime, one has to wonder when the AEW video game will be officially announced. It seems Kenny Omega will have the honors of unveiling the AEW game, which makes sense considering his passion for the industry, but it remains to be seen when such an announcement will take place. It’s possible that the AEW game announcement will happen on an episode of Dynamite, but there’s also a chance that it will take place at a gaming event, like E3 2020, for example.
Whenever the AEW video game is announced, it’s sure to drum up significant fanfare. While the teased similarities to WWF No Mercy is no doubt enough reason for fans to get excited, it’s also worth pointing out that the AEW leadership are passionate about video games themselves. Cody Rhodes is a huge Legend of Zelda fan, and various AEW wrestlers have cosplayed as video game characters during their wrestling entrances. It’s hard to determine just how involved they will be in the development of the game itself, but their passion for games will hopefully mean that they will take extra care to ensure that the game is as high quality as possible.
Those excited for news on the AEW video game should be sure to tune in to AEW Dynamite on Wednesday nights, just in case the announcement happens on an upcoming episode of the show.
The AEW video game is in development for unspecified platforms.
